City Council Member Launches New Program to Encourage Recycling

By Geralda Moise

City Council Member Andy King is bringing beauty back to the 12th District of the Bronx, one program at a time.

Yesterday, the Councilman, along with NYC Parks and the Department of Sanitation launched “Put It In The Basket” at Haffen Park.  The series of service projects is designed to help clean up the community and to educate its residents about the importance of recycling.

To encourage the youth not to litter, yesterday’s hosts introduced trash bins that resembled basketball hoops. The bins will soon be in parks throughout the 12th District so that everyone can: #PutItInTheBasket. These creative baskets were not the only thing new to Haffen Park; Councilman King also cut the ribbon to a new basketball courts.  Attendees received giveaways and were allowed the opportunity to participate in a free basketball clinic for the day.

There was a donation of $47,000 to the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.

But, the work doesn’t stop here for Councilman King. He’ll be launching a new program the 12th of each month to fulfill his call to action:  #OperationCleanerStreets.
