In an industry where imitation is accepted as the norm, Ju$$-B is focused on creating a lane for himself.
With a pen in one hand and his mantra of “simply being himself” in another, this independent artist relies heavily on life’s lessons to create a unique sound one could not possibly label. By breaking all barriers and conforming to none, this lyricist is determine to travel the road to becoming legendary, creating timeless music along the way.
A native of Brooklyn, NY, the 25-year-old says he began writing and rapping at the age of 9. After the passing of his grandmothers, Ju$$-B says he decided to stop writing, later picking back up his pen at 18.
“I started realizing how certain things or tracks I would record people would relate to. So when I started seeing people were actually listening to my music, it encouraged me to do more and to see what else I can make.”
Creating music for all to relate to hasn’t always come easy to Ju$$-B. The artist candidly admits to at times, struggling to refrain from folding to the pressure of creating music that pleased his listeners more than it pleased him.
By refusing to drown in the hype of present-day radio airplay, Ju$$-B says he stays focused by listening to other artists after the hype has simmered.
“Now, I have no limit and I’m not trying to make [music] for everyone like how I used to. I make what I want to make, if you like it, you like it If you don’t, you don’t. If you respect that grind and know the process, you’ll appreciate the music I’m trying to bring to the table.”
For Ju$$-B, some of his proudest moments have come from just that: his incomparable grind. From opening up for the legendary Run DMC to performing in BXC’s music festival, to a collaboration with PHresher, Ju$$-B says he’s grateful and staying focused.
As for any artists on the journey to fame, Ju$$-B says he’s often met with times of frustration. However, it’s in these times that he’s met with the self-confidence that not many of his peers are creating timeless music like he strives to.
“I recently had a break down, where I felt like I wanted to quit but people called me and told me listen ‘You’ve been doing this and you have to understand that the route you’ve been taking isn’t the route that everyone else takes. You’re taking the route of becoming legendary and timeless.'”
With being an adamant dream-chaser comes great challenge. For Ju$$-B, his challenges serve as the driving forces behind his motivation to succeed, by any means necessary.
“My dad has a saying, ‘A man is only as good as his word.’ People always say they’ll do something, it’s hard to believe people in this industry, People lose sight on a lot of things when money is involved. I’ve told a selective few people if you’re willing to take this ride with me, I’ll never turn my back on you. I take that seriously. At the end of it, the reward will be beyond what we expected. I know that as long as I keep doing what I’m doing, I’ll get to where I need to be.”
For Ju$$-B, he’s almost there.
Currently working on his latest project OneNine, scheduled for release in early 2017, Ju$$-B says this project is one of the realest ones he’s created.
“September 19th is a very emotional day for me. I lost my first child and it was a big up-and-down battle for me. I stopped my music, I couldn’t write a song for her. Then one day, I woke up and I’m like I think ‘I got it’. It’s going to be the most powerful and emotional song [of the project]. I don’t know what’s up with 19, this year on April 19th my best friend died. I have a song for him. This project is going to be real raw, no filter. Almost every track will be powerful and from the heart.”
For Ju$$-B, it’s his latest project that will prove to music lovers everywhere that his music is timeless.
“From now until whenever, you’ll be able to listen to a song by me and it’ll give you a mood that you need.”
